Surrey Cabinet agrees to build new primary school in Redhill

At a recent meeting Surrey County Council’s Cabinet agreed to allocate funds to build a new primary (2-form) school in the north Redhill area, with 430 places.  They have instructed the County’s Head of Estates Planning and Management to seek to find and enter into negotiations to acquire a site for a new school in the north Redhill area.

Further details on the size and possible location and opening date of the new school are currently unclear, and we will pass on this information when it is available.

Cllr Rois Miah, Redhill East Ward Councillor, said:

”This is good news for residents and something that we have been pushing for locally for some time.

As a parent I know how difficult it has become in recent years for local people to find the right available local school for their children.  We have seen a number of cases locally where children have ended up having to travel outside of our area to find a school that has a place available.

The shortage of places has been caused by new housing development, forced upon us by the government, without funding for public services such as schools.  There has also been an increase in the birth rate in Surrey since 2000.

I am optimistic that this announcement of a new school in the area will enable local parents to finally have a real local choice when trying to find the best school for their children.”

The relevant recommendation agreed by the Cabinet reads as follows:

(3) That the Head of Estates Planning and Management, in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, be authorised to enter into negotiations to acquire a site for a new school in Redhill (Reigate & Banstead).

It’s approaching a year since news of this story broke. I, and I’m sure many other parents in Redhill, would be very grateful for an update on what progress has been made during the course of the year with regards to finding and acquiring a site for the new school and a possible time-frame for construction and opening.
