Surrey Police appeal for witnesses to lead theft in Reigate and Redhill

Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses following the theft of lead from two properties in Reigate and Redhill last weekend (Saturday, 15 May).

The first incident happened between 4pm on Saturday, 15 May, and 8.30am Monday, 17 May, Surrey Police had a report from the owner of a property in High Trees Road, Reigate, when he noticed lead missing from his roof and damage to the guttering. On further inspection approximately 20sq meters of lead had been removed from the property’s roof at an estimated cost of £4,500.

The second incident occurred just before 9pm on Sunday, 16 May at a property in Talfourd Way, Redhill, when the roof area of a residential building had approximately £100 worth of lead stripped from its roof.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Kevin Booth said:

“Both of these incidents occurred in residential areas. The weekend is a busy time with friends, relatives and residents coming and going in the roads. I am appealing to anyone that was in the area last weekend and possibly saw someone that they now think was acting in a suspicious way to come forward and give us their information to enable us to further our investigation.

“Metal theft is a real concern to us and lead flashing is seen as an attractive and expensive commodity for thieves. However, anyone who steals metal could face up to five years in prison. “

Neighbourhood Sergeant Olly Smith said:

“I would like to reassure residents and local businesses that the Neighbourhood Officers visit various dealers and scrap metal yards in the area to obtain valuable information on those attempting to sell scrap metal on. We are committed to tackling this issue and with your help we can respond quickly to these offences and take the appropriate action.”
