Calling Redhill’s train passengers – have your say before it’s too late

Passengers who use Redhill station are being urged to say what they would most like to see happen from a list of proposed improvements. This will help Southern Railway, the rail operator and manager of the station, to prioritise changes to the station which are due to start towards the end of this year.

The survey can be completed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/G6PTYYV

Southern’s Programme Manager, Corinne Sharpe said:

“This is a great opportunity for our passengers to have a say in what and how they would like their stations to be improved. We have a number of proposals for each station and, although we won’t be able to everything, we will try to take account of what our passengers tell us they want the most.”

Cllr Julian Ellacott, ward councillor for Redhill West said:

“It is very good news that Southern are investing in the station and asking passengers for their views.  As a local train user I will be submitting my views and urge other Redhill residents to do the same.”

Among the choices for improvements are improved layout of booking halls, improved waiting rooms, better lighting, relocation and improvement of seating, upgrading of toilets, additional cycle spaces, improved pedestrian routes. Each station has its own unique list of improvements for passengers to choose from, and the survey closes on Monday 16 August.

Need for lift access to mezzanine level. In the listing of stations for disability access Redhill is shown as OK.

On this basis, to get to platform 1 from the ticket office one has to go outside, walk under the bridge, up the first part of Redstone Hill, on to platform 3,down in the lift to the mezzanine level, along the mezzanine and up the other lift to platform 1. Try doing this with a heavy case!

  2. I totally agree, and this was a point I made in my response. The access is totally inadequate – I am not an expert on the Disability Discrimination Act but it does surprise me how the station could possibly fulfil its requirements.
Please fill in the online survey and make this point, if you haven’t done so already.

What provisions are there for car parking within the Holly brook development? I expect a significant number of residents will have cars but on site parking appears very limited. This could put pressure on street parking for existing residents in the area. The situation won’t affect me directly but I do try to think of the overall impact on the neighbourhood.

  4. Andrew – apologies for the delay (I have been away). There will be underground parking on the Queensway site, I believe slightly less than one space per dwelling. As you say this will create some pressure on surrounding roads, but given its location I expect at least some residents not to have cars. I have also suggested to the developer that they include pool cars for sharing by residents of the development (as part of a wider scheme which RBBC and SCC are launching in Reigate and Redhill), but have yet to hear back.

Given the planning rules at the time it would have been very risky for the Council to refuse permission for the development on the basis of inadequate parking; only last month SCC approved a new set of parking standards for consultation which would require a minimum number of spaces per new property, instead of a maximum number as at present.
